I like your idea of a max N test strip. Life and corn growing would be a lot easier if we knew what sort of year it was going to be ahead of time!

I think the folks with the 0.6 may in fact miss some peak yield in some years. However they have chosen to be consistently profitable than chase peak yields. As you point out, many times max profit yield is NOT the same as max yield. However I would say they seem to harvest VERY good yields for their area.
