Two things I do are kick your boot in the soil, if the soil sticks to the toe of your boot then that's a sign that it's probably to wet, also kinda what you described grab a handfull of soil and roll it in a ball, if it crumbles when you try to break it up it's fit, if it smears it's too wet.
