Hay Wilson in TX

Subject: Price what the market is willing to pay.

Little River, TX
If the going price is not to my liking I do not actively market my hay.
I do check what is the common asking price.

I also know what dollar amount is in the hay and do not sell at a loss.

In 2007 was so wet all my alfalfa died so I have not been following alfalfa prices. Here bermudagrass hay is selling for $4 a small bale and $40 for a round bale. This is below the cost of production. The problem is last year a lot of stuff was wrapped into a bundle and called hay. Now people are trying to clear their fence row of round bales and their chicken house of square bales.

In addition we have a two tiered property tax system in Texas. Farm land is taxed at a very low rate, while open land is taxed at the going price. Putting up hay will keep the Ag Evaluation rate.

Selling hay at below real market value is charity. There are a few people who do receive charity.
