Subject: Re: TA in IH tractors

Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND
The first generation mechanical actuated TA's used a planetary gear set and Sprag clutch for low range, and a spring applied single plate clutch for direct drive. The later hydraulic actuated TA's used a separate spur reduction gear set for low and another for high TA range with a Sprag clutch driving the trans in low range, and a multi disc hydraulic wet clutch in high range. The late TA's also had a small wet disc hydraulic clutch in tandem with the Sprag clutch to prevent freewheeling runaway when going downhill in low range. The latest version replaces the troublesome Sprag clutch with a ratchet like device called a mechanical diode. The mechanical diode does not wear as fast as the Sprag clutch. This site gives a good explanation of the mechanical diode.
