Illinois DNR re-established coyotes and in short order the groundhog population was all but extinct.
It's rare to see a gourndhog anymore. If you do it's near a home or the edge of towns and cities.
Same thing happened here. Coyotes also wiped out the quail population. They hunt fence rows going down each side pushing the quail until they catch them. They are also tough on small cats and dogs. Coy dogs are even worse as they are prone to get into packs instead of staying as singles or doubles. But we have almost no groundhogs! |
