There are plenty of expensive rice herbicides to kill the grass, but most of them are designed to be used in conjunction with a managed flood. The main purpose of the flood is keep out weeds, but rice does require nearly saturated soils during the reproductive stages to get enough water. Rice is an aquatic plant, and as such doesn't have a very deep or efficient root system for getting water.
There have been guys trying to grow rice without flooding it for years now, but I don't know of any around here that have really been successful doing it. | |
