Subject: RE: raven auto rate adjust

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
There are several keys on the newer Raven consoles that refer to "hidden" meanings. These second meanings for the keys were a way to get more features involved.

These are not always explained in the oweners manuals although most of them are. Delay to Automatic, Low Limit, Display Smoothing and some others are secondary meanings for certain keys.

The newer Ravens have some of this under the DATA menu but the older ones had them under the other keys.

The Delay to Automatic is useful at times especially with NH3. Since the system bleeds down on the ends, a rush of product goes through the system when you first start to reapply. This rush spins the turbine rapidly until the system gets full. The system sees this as overapplication and will shut the control valve down somewhat. About the time it gets the control valve shut down, the system gets full and then there is a period of underapplication until the control valve reopens.

Using the Delay to Automatic will put the control function on hold for the number of seconds that you specify. I used to use 5 seconds. By then the system is full and automatic control will again take place. Since the control valve was in the "proper" spot when you shutdown for an end, it should be in about the "proper" spot when you start reapplying.

The Low Limit that is active in your Raven is useful in many situations - most commonly waterways that you spray through. Often the waterways are very rough and you need to slow down considerably to avoid damage to rig.

When you do this, the flow rate per minute will be decreased in an attempt to keep the flow rate per acre in agreement with your target rate. Generally this is fine and desirable except when you go really slow, the tips may check off. Some operators used to switch to manual before they slowed way down to prevent the tip checkoff.

The Low Limit feature does this automatically and is a way to maintain a minimum flow under any conditions. When you slow down, the system will cut the flow rate per minute back as it usually does until it reaches the Low Limit which has been set. When this happens the console will beep and flash LL to warn you that this is happening.

The application rate per acre during this time will be higher than your target rate but this is a consequence of setting a LL. This is generally more desirable than having the tips checkoff.
