| For those of you that don't know, about 34% of the mississippi river is diverted out into the Atchafalya River near Simmesport, LA. About 25 mi from me. These are the two structures that perform the duty. One built early and another built after the early one was just about lost on 1973. Presently, the river is near or above 1973 levels on the Miss side. Any rain on the outlet side will cause flooding on the outlet side. There is some already, but nothing that is not expected to routinely flood.
The turbulence is greater at the old structure due to design, but the new one moves more water. There is also a hydro electric plant that lets out about 1/3 of the total discharge. The pic of the tow is the locks that allow traffic between the miss, atchafalya, and red rivers.
The swells are about 20' ft high and each structure is almost 1/4 mi long. The pics are deceiving as to the scope of what is passing through. Imagine letting loose 1/3 of 2 million cfs at one place.
