There is allot to be said for placing the fertilizer where the crop can use it. Savings of 30% to 50% puts your money where you can use it.

We have several growers doing this and even more that will be doing this spring and next fall. Some have been doing it with chisel plows and strip till units. Now we are setting up allot of NH3 applicators, which keeps the cost down. They can do variable rate N, P and K in one pass.

Our experiences over the past several years have shown that the cart used is very important. A cart with a Type A distribution system (large air stream into a primary manifold) and precision metering augers, rather than metering rolls, has proven to be very accurate and trouble free. This is especially true when fertilizer rates are over 100 pounds per acre of either dry product, which is most of the time. We have set up many Bourgault carts. None of these have used any drying agents, floor dry or diesel fuel to keep things flowing.
