Subject: RE: Black Raspberries from seeds

NW Washington
Birds do a great job of planting black berries around my place. The bird's GI track seems to work wonders. Don't have a clue as to what is required to spark germination/break dormancy of raspberry seeds, but Google could probably find something.
I think I would just go look for some disease free black raspberry plants.

Well, I had to look. Here is a cut and paste from a heady abstract on seed dormancy and it looks like stomach acid might be needed.

"Of several treatments evaluated for breaking seed dormancy in raspberry cultivars June, September and Rubin (cold shock treatment, treatment with 0.1%, 1.0% or 10% GA3, and treatment with 33% H2SO4) treatment for 10 minutes with 33% H2SO4 followed by neutralization for 2 h with Na2CO3 resulted in the highest germination (42.99%, 36.77% and 48.33% in cultivars June, September and Rubin, respectively). Cold shock (-3°C, 3 times, for 24 h) also gave good results."
