NE SD | A local guy did a lot of no-till corn-on-corn this spring. He mowed most of the stalks last fall with a bat-wing mower and left a thick matt of residue on the ground. He did have some trouble getting it in........and the only reason I can see that he got by with mowing it is that he is on 38" rows and didn't have near the amount of residue that the 20-30" guys have. I'm still with Jim on the cornstalks whether it be strip-tilling or no-tilling. Leave the stalks long and tall. Not only will it help keep the area between the row clean and help warm it up but they do less damage to your tires and help reduce compaction at the same time. | |
