I think I have  something like you describe. A couple of my sweetcorn patches got hit hard by rootworm and Japanese beetles. They had long silks at first till the bugs arrived. They were digging into the ends of the ears trying to get silks.

I  think that is what caused some of my ears to have a blank side. Those silks got ate and never pollinated.
