Southwest Missouri | I am currently studying the issue. We might have enough hay, but not certain. Our milo fields can not be pastured (no fence, no water, no shelter, too far from home, etc.) We would have to bale it. We have the equipment but fall is a busy time. I do not want to spend precious time and even more precious diesel unless it looks like a good return.
I'm trying to get a neighbor and friend to commit to buying some to feed his cows.
As an alternative, another guy wants to bale it to heat his turkey houses. He put in a round bale furnace this year. I have heard one or two other guys do it. Problem is, he thinks he will be doing us a "favor" getting it off the field so we can no til wheat. We are still thinking about price.
About 10 years ago we baled milo stubble. I did not test it, but I imagine protein was low and fiber was high, (since it was a mature plant). But we did feed it. The cows stayed in pretty good shape. They ate the leaves but not the stalks very well.
The nitrate and prussic acid can be tested before baling. | |
