Driftless SW Wisconsin | I did NOTsay put all of your N down in the fall, but what FRACTION you do apply in fall I suggest putting it under the seed and early. AS Norsk points out in the other wheat thread, it seems a lot of growth characteristics are determined early.
Sure you don't want too lush a growth in the fall but getting the fertilizer near the root zone early lets the plant develop smoothly until freeze and has a reserve there to get started again in the spring before you can get into the fields. Obviously P & K are important also. I assume you have done soil testing. Sorry if I was not clear. The amount applied in fall under the seed in the fall vs in spring over the top may vary considerably from location to location.
