My Ford F700 with the same sort of axel, the spec is around .002 to .010" end play. I have a dial caliper with a magnetic base etc. that I use.
I just did the same thing your doing on an old F600 I bought. I honed out the wheel cly. and replaced the cups. I took the master off and it was all full of rust and crap too. The truck had been sitting for years.
