I have had good luck by keeping a calf away from the cow for a few hours, 3 to 4 then put the calf in a smaller pen with the cow. I also have a small spray bottle that I fill with water and molasses and spray that over the back and head of the calf, one time spray usually does the job if not spray again. I never have to skin a calf by doing this. Never had a cow that wouldn't take a calf by doing this. The sweet smell and taste make the cow lick the calf like it is new and it covers up any other smell on the calf.
