Missouri
Excellent discussion, couple of years of turmoil and each day we attemp to adjust to the factors. Our weather continues to beat us up, been a long winter already. Watching the hay pile shrink and the calander still long way from grass. I firmly believe one of the adjustments will be mature cow size. Those 1500# cows just eat to much, and the calves need to much corn to finish. Have felt sometime, something would split the beef industry into quality beef and generic beef. High inputs & corn could be what causes it to happen. I was slow to accept that agriculture/farming would be tied to Energy, but now accept they have linked the two. We now have to figure out how to adjust also, High fertilizer prices is one of the adjustments, High land cost/rent for anything that could grow crops is another. The cow numbers being short currently, should not be forgotten, as that will come back into play, along with the age of the ranchers. The prediction of a 20% reduction in cow numbers could easy come true, that in itself would reduce the need for fertilizer.
