| Understand that the average rancher is drawing Social Security. And yes he's been through these things before. Many ranchers will sell off low producers that made $$ when even those bottom end calves were bringing $1.25-$1.50 a lb. Many that are within retirement age that have no children willing to do what we do will see this as a time to send the cows to town. Maybe run a few yearlings or quit entirely. If your land values are like here,(4 x what it should be to make a wage ranching) more than a few will cash in and sell the ranch. This has already happened here. Much of the land is sold to out of state hunters who don't want a cow in sight. Even if we see a 5-7 % cow herd reduction it will have a big impact.
