Subject: Composting Experience in Iowa

Leesport, PA
We have been composting hogs from three 1200 head fisnhers for probably 5 to 7 years and from another two 1200 head finishers for 3 years.

We don't use a pad/bin system. Just pile on the ground. Using cornstalk bales we put down about a two to three foot layer, put on the hogs, and cover with three to four foot of corn stalks. Piles usually end up about 8 to 10 foot wide and 6 to 7 foot tall. We lay it out in a long line and add to it as we have more deads. Usually let it sit for 4 to 6 months before reusing. When we turn the piles about all you can find is the occasional skull that crushes easily with the skidloader.

We just had our first DNR visit on the three year old site about two weeks ago. DNR man was happy with our system. He did say that they wanted the ground under the piles compacted first so that the water couldn't move through the soil. He seemed satisfied when we told him the pile was on the same spot they had stacked the fill dirt and that there had been a lot of dozer traffic over the area.
