Roy, sheep guys call that a slime graft.

To take it a little farther, some range operations that shed lamb take all the newborns away as soon as they are born. They drop them all in a holding pen, then pen the ewe. They check the udder and if she can handle twins, they give her two. If she can only handle one, they give her one. Rarely are they the same lambs that she dropped.

A mother, cow or ewe, only knows her own by the smell.

That said, I can do it with ewes, never worked for me with a calf.
