Southwest Illinois | You must have better markets than here is St. Louis. Our coop cost of DAP just went to $710 and they must pay by the end of the month to guarantee spring supply. NH3 is mostly paid for but I'm hearing retail prices for fall paid now of $800-900 up state. Sheds and tanks are darn expensive and so is interest(even though its low). Even a guy farming 2000 acres would have to store 200T each of Dap and Potash and another 110T of NH3 just for one year. Add the money to that and he has a $200,000 fertilizer bill. Even if he had the sheds and tanks for free and wanted to buy another 2 years worth he would need the $200K for this year and $400K for next year. I don't know many guys farming 2000 acres that could finance that type of purchase, nor do I know any bankers who would provide the money and I don't know of one farmer who could take delivery now and store it in his own facilities. | |
