Ripley, Ontario Canada
I agree with Ben. I foster lots of calves each year and only had 1 real failure. This is dairy calves onto beef cows that have lost a calf. I usually buy 2-3 week old calves from neighbour and foster onto cows that had dead calves or calves die at 2-3 weeks. Usually start in chute for 2 or 3 times. Then in small pen with stick, then outside pen with stick. After 2-3 weeks then kick outside. I have very few failures, but it takes 1/2 hour 2x per day. I usually try to see calf suck 15 min 2x per day until I am sure he is sucking on his own. I don't skin them or pour anything on them, and by fall the cows usually treat them as their own.
