I find that if the cow has never smelled her dead calf, say if you pulled out a dead calf while she was in the headgate, then just quickly get an orphan and wet him down with her afterbirth and fluids. Seems to always work.
On the other hand if the cow has smelled and licked her dead calf it is always a struggle to graft on an orphan
