Jack, I remember a few years ago when guys were paying $100/ton for mediocre quality CRP hay that had to be trucked in from a couple hundred miles away. I do think a cows nutrutional needs can be guaged somewhat by their mineral consumption. On dry dormant native pasture alone they were really hitting the stuff. This old hay I'm feeding looks surprisingly good after the outside of the bale comes off. The cows are contented, maybe I'm treating them a bit too well and should make them graze a bit more. The only purchased feed input the cows are getting right now is the mineral. IMO, anything a guy can do to improve the quality, quantity, and distribution of livestock water year round pays off in the long run. IMO it's a good move to take advantage of ECP and EQIP livestock water programs if available.
