Missouri
Our first time for rye and it looks pretty good, was not able to graze it in fall so it grew up very nice has melted down. It was originally planted as a covercrop for compliance, as we baled the corn stalks. We will not mud it to graze it in spring, as need to notill back to soybeans. Plan at present is to tube the rye for silage to feed to the feeders next winter. We tubed some 2007 april freeze damaged wheat that has really worked good. This all has really made that land earn its keep. Corn/Fodder/Rye/Soybean. Cost is the fertilizer, just the top dress N of 60# will be $40 applied. Corn stubble was hard on P&K it got put back in fall it cost to much. but cheap today. At the rate I see hay ground going to crops it might become SOP. Learning how to utilize the neighbors tube wrapper. So far so good, this long winter is testing man and the forage supply. Lucky we pulled out everystop to get to this point. For some reason, maybe the April freeze we were really short of stockpiled forage, Not an old bale of hay left in our coutry. Prices of hay actually might be cheaper that the fertilizer bill to grow it next year.
