Subject: Feeding cows on stalks.

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass!
I see most people feeding poor quality hay to cows on stalks. Why don't they just feed a little grain mix instead? I just finished doing chores for a friend that went to Cancun for a week and that is what he does. 5# per head to closeup cows in old tires. Old Massey, I think, combine bin on an old power wagon with small tractor tires on it and a good heater. Electric closer on the slide gate. He knows they are getting the minerals they need and cheaper than tubs I would think. Side benefit is I could lead those caws any where with that truck and never had to go looking for them. He won't feed any hay until it gets too soft in the field and then It will be good alfalfa limit fed in the lot. He always has good looking calves and I don't see him having much trouble. When they get really close he will switch to evening feeding and very seldom has a nite calf. What is wrong with his system and why don't more people use it or something like it?
