Audrain County, Missouri | From what we've seen in the past, I'm figuring on grazing through the month of April, maybe into early May depending on when we can turn out on our grass pasture. We'll bale the rye that remains, and plant the field to beans. I'm sure the field will be tracked up by the cows, so we'll work the ground prior to planting.
The rye grows very aggressively as the weather warms, and I will be stocking it at about 2 dry cows per acre. With the fall growth that will not have been grazed by then and the new growth, I'll get them running on it as soon as it greens up.
I definitely will crop that field again this coming year. Using this as an in between crop just to stretch last year's poor hay crop. With grain prices running as high as they are, I need to make sure that we get the summer crop planted.
