We don't use them, everything is close enough we feed with a tractor, saves wear and tear on your truck, and if the weather is bad you can still go. I do have a couple friends that have bale beds, they are actually brothers, I'm pretty sure one is a Deweze, and one is a Bessler. Never heard them complain about either one, and they are both engine driven. We used to have just a 12 volt bale spike in an old chevy truck, and it ate batteries, like you mentioned. It really doesn't look to me like it takes much to plumb them in. The most intriging part is when my friends put the flat bed on, it cut their Insurance premiums a bunch.
