Total hog numbers were pegged at 79.1 million head as of December, including a breeding inventory of 7.71 million head. The latter figure was one percentage point higher than a year ago and up slightly from last quarter. The market hog inventory, at 71.4 million head, was up two per cent from last year but down one per cent from last quarter. On the U.S. side, the overall inventory has grown by four per cent over the past year, while Canada’s has fallen by six per cent, the report says. The U.S. sow herd, at 6.16 million head, was up one per cent from last year, and up slightly from the previous quarter. In contrast, the Canadian breeding inventory, at 1.55 million head, was down two per cent from last year and down slightly from last quarter. |
