Subject: everyone needs more techs.

Alberta, Canada

Was talking with a local private AG repair shop and the owner was complaining he can't compete with the oil industry for mechanics anymore. AG dealerships JD, CIH, AGCO etc. are having the same problem experienced heavy duty mechanics are a hot commodity these days. Local JD dealership is now at $95 an hr. shop rate. NOt sure what their paying thier mechanics but a friend of mine says he was offered $75hr by CAT if he supplied his own pickup service truck etc with tools. This was last year or so....it could be more now.

I agree with others if one has to pay 70-100 bucks an hr. you would hope you are getting an experienced tech. Not a rookie "learning" by fixing your tractor all by himself taking 10hrs when an experienced guy can do it in 6hrs. I have no problem if the apprentice is working along side of the experienced tech etc. and being supervised. But I see all too often a shop is busy so the apprentice is left on his own to "figure" it out at the customers expense.

I run older stuff and fix it myself luckly. Friend in the construction business asked me to look at some of his equipment. Claims the dealerships are backed up like 2- 3 weeks to get anything in to fix!
