| wolf, right now rye is our only cover crop used---broadcast in the fall after harvest and killed with glyphos in the spring about knee high(usually by early to mid-april). Been doing this about 5 years with no extra bug problems so far. The way we manage the rye is to not let it get any bigger and we also don't broadcast over a bushel/acre. If you sow rye 2 bu/ac and let it get waist high or bigger in the spring then you can have problems---either drying the soil out too much before you kill it or the soil won't dry out because of so much residue after you kill it. Our answer was to control seeding rates and the size when we kill it so as to get all the residue and root structure we can without causing problems for the next crop. Sometimes that's a fine line. When rye comes out of dormancy in the spring it really takes off, so have your sprayer ready. | |
