Subject: Re: frost bitten feet? how common

Missouri
We went years without frozen feet, but lately have had to many. Each case is little different as front foot is better than hind. Disposition of mother is important because for any chance to salvage the calf means TLC. Let one get to around 300# before size and pain of the bone going into the ground to walk, hurt me. Did have two last year that only froze outside of the hind toes, both hind feet. One got lots of TLC all summer, but now at 500# the frozen ground was to much, Gave him to a neighbor. The other made it all summer, weaned and ready to sell before noticed one morning on frozen ground, she was having trouble, could not believe it. She is in small pen and should be able to grow to pretty good size. At the markets frozen ear cattle are often sorted off because they show up with bad feet in the feedlots, as they get bigger and stand a good chance of being forced to sell before finished, that is why they discount the ears. Goodluck, still will take the cold over the mud.
