I have not had a cow killed, but I would think a 5 year old in decent shape wouldn't be too bad. I would want some cover on her though. If she was thin, and just off grass (although at this time of year I don't think she is just off grass) I think a couple months of corn would help greatly. You also need to realize you are killing a cow, and it won't be as good as a younger animal. May want to look into tenderizing the steak and being picky about which cuts you get.
