| Really don't think its a hybred thing as I plant about a dozen different varieties each year and see it in all but one this year. Haven't figured out why that field is different ,yet. But have noticed where more N-30 vs 45 vs 80- was applied early and got good rain on it, that the crop is standing the dry weather better as the amount of early applied n increases. Looks like 30 was not near enough, 45 better , 80 best and all sidedress the worst. Wish I could remember the website that Sucessful Farming was pushing to have everyone check and use thier recommended rates. I think it was university related but not sure. Do know that for my part of Iowa, they recommended only 110LBs N. I've always been of the opinion that the old farmers knew what they were doing when they applied 140 lbs year after year. The spring nitrate tests I ran for a few years confirmed that rate three years in a row, so I don't do the spring nitrate test anymore. And, after this year, 60# will go on with the herbicide at planting. | |
