Effingham, IL | The U of MN does indeed recommend reduced rates of P&K, but only under certain situations. As far as N goes, I'm not aware of them recommending any reduction in rates although they may have some recent research which I have not seen yet. It would surprise me if they did recommend reduced rates of N because it would be like playing with fire. N rate responses vary from field to field so saying that you can reduce rates across the board would be setting yourself up for a whole heap of trouble in the future. I just don't see a University setting themselves up for that amount of risk.
Here's what they say about P&K:
"Fertilizer use guidelines from the past have suggested that rates of phosphate and or potash needed for optimum production can be halved, compared to broadcast applications, if those nutrients are applied in a band near the seed and soil test values are in the low and very low ranges."
