The ones in my German/Swiss childhood were called "Springerles." They were nearly white, rectangular (maybe 1.5 x 2 inches) and also got very hard, although not in 15 minutes. They are rolled with a rolling pin that has various designs cut in it, along with the rectangular borders. Baked on a cookie sheet sprinkled with anise seeds.
Wife and daughter BOTH do very tolerable versions of this recipe. I am a lucky guy.
