Subject: Rate cutting only works for that year.

Our experience and neighbors who use starter on corn have found that corn yields will hold up in that year. However, soybean yields will trend lower until broadcast p&k is applied to feed the soybeans. Using starter only will lead to p levels in low single digits resulting in spindly soybeans with one and two bean pods. That is one reason why so many farmers have quit using starter because they had to make another trip for p&k on the beans plus the N has to get on some how, so why not blend it all together and be done in one trip.

Standard practice in this area is to use "build" levels of p&k plus urea for the corn with the beans getting the leftovers. Eventually the guys who think that build levels are a ripoff find their bean yields dropping and increase their p&k rates.
