Subject: Calving helpfull hints???

Quincy, IL
I was wondering if anyone would have helpfull hints to share, that they use when calving?

I like to carry twine from a square bale of hay in my tractor/4 wheeler to help pull calves with. Put one on each leg. Just throw it away when done. Instead of having to clean up the chains. Also use a stick/pole or something at the end of the twine, to pull on, to get more leverage and not hurt my hands as much.

When the calf acts like its having trouble breathing/from fluid in lungs, I hold it upside down to let dislodge it. Also use a piece of something(weed, straw, hay) to tickle the nostril to make it cough/sneeze, to clear up the the breathing problem.

I have used maple syrup on the back of an orphan calf to get the new mother to accept it. She licks the syrup and helps with bonding.

I have skinned dead calves before and tied it on the orphan calf also.

Are there other helpfull things that you might do to assist in helping the calf get started?

Thanks!
