why wait on the drought gene? What will it cost on royalties?
Better is to have good balanced soils in nutritional good status, just a little more than N-p-k approach you know of your extension offieir and you will have your drought gene, without having to pay any royalty, no limitations on which varaity to choose of. We have our drought, here in Germany, with 3 weeks of no rain. low humidity and high temperatures. Harvest is up to 3 weeks earlier and first corn sillage was cut last week. Normaly we talk about cutting cornsilage in september. Corn is in some areas just knee high and only 1 plant per square meter.
Now, what makes the differance?
- build organic matter levels. OM can store more water, up to 6 to 10 times than clay and it's all plant available. Just talk with oldtimers in your area and get old soil data. You started with way higher OM numbers than you have now.
- look bejond N-P-K. Look at the traces. Just getting in enough of one Micronutrient you have the same effect than 20% higher rain fall. We are seeing first results. Fields keep longer up and don't give in to drought as quick as neighbours.
- Especialy if you work on high clay soils K is underestimated. We have applied K in high amounts on this type of soils, which should be according to extension offficer not have any K applied, and see big changes. Look up the post of Hay Wilson, it's realy working.
Try things not on a big scale but in small scale to make very, I mean very very, differant. Why not try this minreal relationship system and stick to it for a couple of years?
