Subject: RE: Canola in south central Illinois

Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois

Around 1985-1990, we had a lot of producers who tried canola in this area, some with success, some without.  I visited with a lot of farmers in those years, and asked a lot of questions, as I also felt we needed another crop in the rotation.

The most frequent reply I heard was that canola really needs dry feet, like wheat.  I came to the conclusion that in this area canola should be delegated to the rolling fields in some of the areas where wheat was still grown, and it was not so suitable for the flat lands that are very prone to standing water as is common in our area.

I haven't seen a canola field in this area for many years, part of the reason was the market was so limited, I feel.
