Thumb of Michigan | Jon, not sure on % of wheat acres in the thumb. The acres seem to ballon, then drop depending on many factors. We haven't planted wheat in a couple of years ourselves. I'd consider it again if I had a straw market. We were primarely planting wheat to get a chance for land improvements- tiling, land leveling, etc.
We rented a drill for a few years. I now actually own part of a 1560. Bought it to plant cover crops, cover crop seed, and wheat when we grew it. Our partner ( on the drill) still plants wheat with it, and we rent it out as well. The other owner does plant small, odd shaped fields to soys with the drill, but 95% of his soys get planted with a 22" row planter.I haven't laid eyes on the drill in almost a year. The rental income is more than carrying the cost of ownership for us, as long as I don't use it I'm ahead of the game. | |
