Subject: RE: Question on tiling

Thumb of Michigan
Our tile spacings are similar to astoller's. 10or 15 years ago, had a neighbor who was using a lot of 3" on ground with lots of slope, 4" on flatter ground. Tried retileing some flatter ground with 3" and was very disatisfied with the results. You're always going to have a little sediment in the bottom of the tile eventually. An inch in a 4" doesn't affect the drainage much, an inch in a 3" is almost a useless tile. With lots of slope, a 3" will stay clean enough. I haven't priced tile in a while, but the last I did the tile company I deal with had the same price on 3" vs' 4". He hates 3", doesn't think it works everywhere, and was running 24/7 to keep up with the demand for 4" anyway. And the contractor I work with won't install 3" , so it was kind of a moot point. I'd have to see a huge price difference to ever be interested in 3" myself.
