Subject: Re: Fight over acres ?

Brazilton KS

The problem is that you have to get the acres from somewhere.   Last year, $4 corn was pretty effective at buying acres from $6 beans.   We didn't need the beans all that bad.   Had plenty of them left over.   We had plenty of corn left over, too.

Now, we have a different situation.   Corn needs to maintain acres, at the inflated level established in last year's competition against $6 beans.  Actually, carryout is down....we need to not only maintain acres, but also make up for the bushels of 2006 corn which were ground up in 2007.  It needs to maintain these acres in the face of rotations which were already skewed out of kilter last year, and which will naturally want to work back closer to normal.  And....even though today's market took a hit, beans are still $12.  That makes it harder to beat acres away from them.

Next who-knows.....there's a very small % of the ammonia on at this point in many areas.  NH3 became virtually impossible to get during the fall run.  It's anyone's guess if purchased product is actually going to arrive when the rigs go to the field.  If NH3 delivery gets disrupted, acres are going to turn to beans.....if you can find bean seed.....I have plenty of public varieties sitting in the truck to plant the bean ground and most of the corn if needed, but the rup ready guys probably don't have that seed in the warehouse 'just in case'

Let a corn acre report come out without lowered acres and look out bean prices.  Let it come out without enough to maintain stocks and usage, and look out corn prices.

We haven't even lost the Kansas wheat crop once yet.....it has to happen at least five times before the end of the season.

There's still plenty of room for excitement here.
