Subject: Re: Question on tiling

Tiled 65 acres last year with 3" laterals. Was reluctant to do so because I just saw less margin for error in the laying process. The locals who have done some convinced me that with the big modern laser machines, a near perfect job was possible. We have had a wet year this year and all my neighbors comment about seeing the underground "tile lines." They appear to be doing a super job of handling the water. We are talking heavy gumbo that my father tiled on 75 foot centers back in the 60's. I decided to re tile if I was to make a decent crop off this field. The company laying the pipe claimed that lots of 3" was being laid in Ill. Ind. and Ohio. Wish I could have done 4 inch in 40 foot laterals but the three inch was a little over $500 per acre. In summary, how close you tile depends on the soil type but most of it around my Ky area is being done in three inch laterals. david
