If you have the knowledge and resources to do either, milking your own cows will be the winner in the long run. Much more potential to build equity milking cows, either by paying down debt or growing your herd. Custom raising heifers is simply a cash flow prospect. No equity to build in animals, since you generally don't own them. Its also very similar to renting land--it can disappear as fast as it came your way. Dairymen generally don't have heifers custom raised for the long haul. Its usually during expansion times, and eventually most dairies prefer to raise their own heifers. We had some custom raised, and I can tell you that I don't plan on ever doing that again. Maybe my expectations are too high though.

Put yourself in control, if you enjoy the cows, then milk cows. It will be much better in the long run.
