Subject: Buying used welders

North West IA/western AZ
I am looking to upgrade to an AC/DC welder and am wondering if there is a safe number that I can offer/pay in relation to new. Are these newer welders as solid as my old Lincoln buzz box? Is there any way to tell if the used one has been abused (run way longer than its duty cycle would call for)? Do the newer welders have auto shut off so as not to exceed the duty cycle? I am looking at a used Hobart Stickmate LX and it's Miller counterpart. Not huge $$ figures, but I hate to throw it away too. Thanks
