SW Saskatchewan | We only have one packer in Sask-small,old converted winery-700hd per day capacity.
Canadian feedlots are concentrated in Alberta near the huge state of the art Cargill and Tyson plants.
Can be as further to an Alberta plant than a Minnesota one from eastern Sask or Manitoba- also plants in Washington and Wyoming that rely on Canadian cattle.
Canadian cattle to US depends on (1) slaughter weight and finish-traditionally US plants have taken heavier, more finished cattle than canadian plants (2) when corn is cheap compared to Canadian grain, it pays to move the feeders south , alternatively if we have a poor quality crop, it can be walked off the farm in a pigskin or cowhide. (3) Us eats a lot more sausage, hot dogs and burgers per capita than Canada so bulls and cows have traditionally been sent south along with sows and boars for this mkt.
Now that trade is returning to normal, the movement south is restarting.
Also fueled by high feed prices in Canada- we are exporting barley and importing US corn-seems americans don't care about GMO!
Just kidding about the GMO but our barley does carry a premium per unit compared to corn this year. | |
