Don't know if this belongs on here or Crops. We have corn silage with toxins in. No reason that I can see for it, corn was planted on heavier ground and was never seriously drought stressed. Fertility and PH was near optimum. Yielded decent, got it chopped in time-67% moisture. Plants looked healthy, very little "smut"-less than 1%, I'm sure. The lab we use tests for 4 different toxins, the only one that is high is the one they call T-2. Aflatoxin level is non-detectable, vomitoxin and zearalenone have detectable but non-problem levels. We had this problem(on a more severe basis) 2 years ago and actually had cows die from it. Now we test all silage before we feed it. We have some other, "clean" silage that we are blending with, as well as adding a binder, so we are managing around it but the question is, why is it there? What did I do wrong? What do I need to change to prevent this from happening again? |
