| Russ, most everyone here implanted at branding time 20 yrs ago. Now no one does. I do believe the implants perfomed as advertised on nursing calves. Some guys didn't implant replacement heifers. I did and did not notice any negative effects on the heifers. If anything, IMO the larger heifers were more likely to breed in a timely fashion and have less trouble at first calving. Now everyone is on this "no implants, no creep, no antibiotics, drug-free but give 'em all the shots" kick at the sale barns. For years now we cow/calf guys have been told that we get a premium price for our preconditioned calves. IMO, in reality we just aren't getting docked on price for not giving shots. Non preconditioned calves are a tough go at any sale barn nowdays. This time of year many sale barns are having special sales with preconditoned calves that have had 2 series of fall shots and have been weaned at least 6 weeks. I can see it coming to that for all of us in a few years to get the top $$$. | |
