| One other option to look at, that works for a lot of kids around here is to contact a local cattleman and lease a heifer for the year. You may be able to find someone who has decent quality stock, who wants to see kids become interested in the industry and will be willing to work with the kids to get them started. My kids did this the first year that they wanted to try the beef project, they had all the responsability of taking care of the animal as if they owned it without the upfront expense of purchasing the animal, the normal lease around here is $1.00 for the year. After that, if beef is what they want to keep doing, you can jump in and start spending more. You would want to check with your local fair/4-H to see if leasing is an acceptable option for your area. | |
